“A night to remember”

Walter Lord

Historical, non-fiction

Walter Lord`s, “A night to remember” is a historical, non-fiction piece told from people who were on the ship Titanic. The story is about the unsinkable ship that sailed from England to the United States but then something happened nobody was prepared for.
The character that appears most often is captain smith. The ship sank in the night because it struck an iceberg. Sadly only about 800 people survived from 1500 people. Reading the book allows you to understand what really happened on the ship on that dreadful night.

I really liked to read this book, because it’s a true story. It is really interesting to read the different perspectives of the various people on board. What I also liked about the book, the author managed to really capture us into the scene. Next to all that I thought it was really cool that they had a passenger list and extra facts. If you read this book your really think about it and its very emotional.

I recommend this novel to people who watched the movie and want to know more about what really happened. This book is for people who like suspense. If the book draws you in you can read it in a night. The book is for people who enjoy dramatic books. You have to be attentive throughout the whole novel because it is written sometimes in a complex language. I suggest reading this book when you have free time and the time to let yourself be drawn in.

                                                         The Lord Of The Rings
(book report)

The Lord of the rings by J.R.R Tolken is a fantasy-based book about heroism and adventure. It takes place in the fictional land “Middle Earth” where war has broken out between humans and Orcs lead by the dark lord Sauron to destroy mankind and bring forth a new age of Orcs. Greatly outnumbered by hordes if Orcs, Trolls and many more savage beings, all hope falls to a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins who has been given a powerful ring of  Elvish make that was used by Sauron himself.  To destroy the ring and Sauron with it he must travel across Middle Earth to Mt Doom beyond the Black Gate. With the help of his loyal friend Sam he will embark on the greatest journey to save Middle Earth. The story also tells of their guides Legolas the Elf, Aragorn the Ranger and Gimli the Dwarf who were separated from their Hobbit friends and set out on a path to fight the wars with man and buy precious time for Frodo in the final battle at the black gate.

I thought the book was very captivating and full of excitement; it was very hard to put down once I started reading it. There is lots of good dialogue and action with a very good storyline. But sometimes I lost interest when there was a scenery description that was very long and overly detailed. Also there were not that many tensing moments in the story because the story did not call for them, however the book was had captivating action and characters that made up for a lack of tensity.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy or adventure, or to anyone who likes a good long read. But in general I think that anybody would like and should read this book because there is nothing else really like it.

Ender’s Game

Orson Scott Card

Science Fiction

‘Ender’s Game’ is a story set in the future, mankind have almost mastered space travel and they are at war with an alien species called ‘Buggers’. The story begins on Earth, where we meet Ender for the first time. We also meet his sadistic brother, Peter, who hates Ender and is always trying to injure him. We also meet his sister, Valentine, who cares a lot about Ender. The final character on Earth is Colonel Graff, who runs Battle School. Graff is the person that invites Ender to join Battle School which is in a space station that orbits Earth.

Ender meets a number of different people at Battle School, friends, enemies and sometimes both, he learns how to fight, how to control a fleet and most of all that he can’t trust or rely on anyone.

The book was first written by Orson Scott Card in 1975 and it was first published as a book in the 80s but the author is still able to write about futuristic technology that authors are still writing about today, which means that it isn’t too out of date. During action scenes, the author writes it so you feel like the main character doesn’t have a chance, so you are on the edge of your seat and you can’t put it down.

The chapters in the book always end with you wondering what will happen next, and it’s difficult to know what turn the story will take next, because of this I would recommend this book to people my age that have a lot of time on their hands, for example, a plane trip or a summer vacation as it is difficult to read only one chapter at a time.

“The House of the Scorpion”

Science fiction/fantasy

The House of the Scorpion starts off with the young Matteo Alacran, and tells us about how he is treated throughout his childhood as the clone of a powerful drug lord by the name of El Patron. He faces many hardships, though the main one is the fact that he is not considered a human being because he is a clone. However, he spends his days at the Alacran estate until one fateful day he leaves the safety of his home and his adventure begins.

I quite liked this book; I found it to be an interesting read for me. At the beginning the author described with great detail how he dealt with difficult trials towards him, such as hate and discrimination through his childhood. Around the middle was where I felt that the book started to get more interesting. Making his escape was the beginning of the action in my opinion. Throughout the rest of the book Matt continued to face trials and difficulties, but he managed to hold through. New friendships were formed, young love once lost is found yet again, a wonderful story indeed. I found that the only challenge I had with this book was that I found it very hard to stop reading to take notes. The book manages to capture your attention so completely; you forget you have other things to do. I found that this book was able to be intriguing and exciting, while also having a plotline that makes sense. I liked that the author was able to mix in action with themes that are common to the young teenager, such as bullying and young loves. Overall I really did enjoy this book and would definitely read it once again.

I absolutely would recommend this book, especially if you are an avid reader of science fiction and futuristic type settings. It has a great mix of action and a proper well thought plotline. The plotline in this story is put together very well, and the themes used in it flow very liquidly with each other and is very well organized. This book is very well thought out and is great read. I would most definitely recommend this to anyone.

“The House of the Scorpion”

Nancy Farmer

Fiction/ Fantasy

“The House of the Scorpion”, by Nancy Farmer is an action- packet novel, which is about a boy clone called Matt, who struggles to understand his existence. Not being human, he grows up in a little house in the poppy fields, having Celia, a young woman as his caretaker. But as a change occurred, Matt got to know that he’s the clone of El Patron, a drug lord and the most powerful man in Optium. This isn’t the only major event that took place, since Matt goes on a long journey to find freedom, in a faren land called Aztlan. In Aztlan, he gets to know boys his age, who treat him like one of them. But after an escape with two of his new friends, he meets the girl he grew up with again.

I enjoyed this book. It was well written, in sense of balancing the action and the tragedy. The action parts were very catchy, and made me continue reading. Personally, I don’t like reading, which made it difficult to go over some of the tragedy and the landscape description parts. When an action scene occurred, it mostly turned into a dramatic scene, which took away some of its affection. Overall, I would say I liked the book, but I would’ve appreciated the action parts being a bid deeper.

I recommend this book to people who like action and tragedy. It is a fictional story, which was told in a very realistic way. If you skim through books, you shouldn’t do it with this one, because you’ll most likely get confused with the characters. Reading it at a normal pace, will prevent you from confusions, and will keep you hooked.

Oliver Twist

"Oliver Twist"
Charles Dickens
Fiction, Drama

"Oliver Twist"  is a famous fictional story loved by many readers, was written by Charles Dickens. It is set in 1834, England, its about a boy named Oliver Twist (of course) orphaned since birth, who lived with the cruelest people you could find. He lived 9 years with a horrible woman and then gets taken to an orphanage but gets even more mistreated and later is sold, and so it starts him on his journey to London and his whole story. He has never had a family and so sometimes gets tangled with the wrong crowd. The book follows Oliver's story through out his life and the people around him.

The book has a very distinct and brain twisting style, when a good part comes in it will abruptly stop and switch to another, causing you to read on because you want to continue the scene that was just there in front of you. Consequently this caused me to get frustrated but it wasn't just that, but the language was different the same yet old. It was victorian english in the times on Dickens, but to help me get the story I watched one of the many film adaptations of the book which made it much easier, but yet again like most  books adapted into movies, the book was better.

Personally though I didn’t enjoy the book as much ad I would’ve thought. I prefer adventurous books with magic and battles and sometimes a bit of romance, though not the mushy type. So I recommend this book to people who like deep literature, to those who like drama and conflicts that relate to family. I recommend to read this book with a quiet space, when you are alone. Dont read it with siblings in the room or when you’re out in the city. Tried it and I regretted it. Like all stories by  Dickens, except for one- The mystery of Edwin Drood- there is an ending, I wont spoil it but you probably know it.
