Lachlan Price

Oliver Twist

Charles Dickens

Fiction/Speculative Fiction

“Oliver Twist” is a book set in Victorian England. There is a very large gap between the poor and wealthy. Much of the story takes place in the poor filthy streets of London or the peaceful countryside of England. The story is about a young orphan boy who runs away to the city of London, after being taken in as an apprentice and being treated like an animal. There he meets a gang of criminals such as Dodger,Bill Sikes,Fagin, and more. Oliver must overcome all the challenges thrown at him. He needs to escape the gang’s grasp and find Mr Brownlow, a wealthy old man who took him in after Oliver was accused of a crime he didn't commit.

When I originally chose this book for summer reading I was not expecting it to be very interesting. However, as I read more and more of the book I found it to be far more intriguing. Although Oliver Twist is Fiction I feel that it gave an excellent insight into life in Victorian England, from the perspective of both the wealthy and poor, and what it would have been like at that time. At times I felt that the book was a little too all doom and gloom but I also felt that at times it was happy.  Sometimes the happiness was exaggerated  much like a fairy tale.
Overall I felt this was a brilliantly written book, which I enjoyed very much

I would recommend this to a friend to read, however this is not for everyone. There is very little action except for a few sections so it’s not for the type of reader who likes action throughout the book. This book really suits to a reader who likes a slower pace and books set in a previous time period, rather than a fast action packed book. I would suggest if you want to read this, to take your time to read it, as there is a lot to take in.
