“Oliver Twist”
Charles Dickens
Historical Fiction
Oliver Twist by
Charles Dickens is a historical fiction set in England. Oliver lost his mother
at birth and had to live in a workhouse; until he is sent under the care of an
undertaker. Due to unbearable torture he runs away to London for a better life.
On his way, he meets the Artful Dodger. Oliver is then introduced to Dodger’s
master, Fagin. Hearing Oliver’s history, Fagin decides to use him for his own
gain. The book highlights various challenges faced by an Orphaned Oliver and
how he is helped by various persons. The book brings up issues like poverty,
plight of orphans, crime on children, etc which prevailed during the Victorian
times. In the end the good wins over the
bad as Oliver meets his destiny.
Oliver Twist is
written in Victorian English and a few portions are not very easy to read. However,
the twists and turns of the story keep the reader hooked. There are many happy
moments in the story, though short lived. From time to time the story takes a new
turn and Oliver goes through ups and downs. To conclude, the story is adventurous
and gladly Oliver overcomes the challenges.
I would recommend
this book to people who enjoy reading dramatic and action filled stories. While
reading this book, it is important to concentrate on the symbolism so you get
the right message that Dickens is trying to convey.
